NIT Patna is the 18th National Institute of Technology established in 2004 by the Department of H.R.D. Government of India after rechristening the former Bihar College of Engineering Patna. With the establishment of the pleaders' survey training school, which was subsequently promoted by Bihar College of Engineering Patna in 1924, NIT Patna marked its humble start in 1886. This made the National Institute of Technology, Patna India's 6th oldest engineering institute. Later, in 1978, the graduate-level programme was elevated to the postgraduate level. The National Institute of Technology, Patna is located behind Gandhi Ghat, one of Patna's most famous and reverential locations, on the south bank of the holy river Ganges.

The National Institute of Technology, Patna has been declared an Institute of National Significance and a fully autonomous status has been granted by the Government of India, MHRD. The institute has been ranked 72nd in the NIRF 2021 Rankings in the engineering category. The National Institute of Technology, Patna has also been declared a Center of Excellence for the provision of high-level education, scientific, engineering and humanities instruction, research and development. The National Institute of Technology, Patna currently has seven disciplines, including architecture, civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, information technology and mechanical engineering, and well-established physics, mathematics and humanities and social sciences departments.
