National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur is one of the 31 NITs of India which was established on 7th August 1986 as Regional Engineering College. This was as a result of a joint effort of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh. Initially, NIT Hamirpur had only two departments namely Civil and Electrical Engineering having an intake of 30 students each. Today, NIT Hamirpur is set up over a sprawling 132 acres of campus overlooking the scenic beauty of Himachal Pradesh. NIT Hamirpur offers various bachelor, master and doctoral programmes in Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Humanities and Management. The institute strongly encourages close interaction with the industry and conducting research. 

On 26th June 2002, the institute was awarded the status of a Deemed University and renamed to the National Institute of Technology. It is now an Institute of National Importance set up by an Act of Parliament, that is, the National Institute of Technology Act 2007. The provisions of this act accord it the status of a non-profit institute. The institute is ranked 23rd and 99th in NIRF Ranking 2021 in the architecture and engineering categories respectively. The yearly intake of students in NIT Hamirpur now is around 3000 and there is a faculty base of around 170+ members.
