Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, an Institute of National Importance, came into being in 2008. The autonomous institute is one of the new IITs established under the Institutes of Technology Act.  As per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021, the institute ranks 21st among India's engineering institutions and 51st in the overall category. Furthermore, IIT Patna has secured the 47th position in the research category in NIRF Ranking 2021.

IIT Patna offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in science, humanities and social sciences, engineering, and technology. Indian Institute of Technology, Patna provides B.Tech courses in five disciplines, namely Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. The institution also delivers comprehensive and collaborative M.Tech programmes in eight different specialisations. 

Indian Institute of Technology has been recognised by the University Grants Commission and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
